After a morning at leisure, today we will start to visit all the highlight destinations in Phnom Penh. Begin with the horrors that unfolded decades ago. We will visit the fields of Death known as Choeung Ek Killing fields. Located an estimated 15 km from Phnom Penh’s southwest, you will be shocked by the inhuman truth in the darkest period of Cambodia’s history. There were thousands of dead victims under the reign of Khmer Rouge – Pot Pol between 1975 and 1978. Furthermore, you will see around 8000 skulls in the Memorial Stupa and also human bone as well as the few small wooden structures to worship the death people here.
For our next destination, we will move to a famous museum, which recorded brutal crimes of the Khmer Rouge Regime – the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum. This was a high school before it became a “S-21” prison during Pol Pot’s genocidal rule. It’s an opportunity for you to learn more about the tragic past where millions of Cambodian were killed in this reign of terror.
We will then transfer to a restaurant for lunch. After you finish your lunch meal, take some beautiful photos at the Independent Monument. Continue our exploration, we will visit the Royal Palace – home of the Emperor family. You will be overwhelmed by the spectacular and gorgeous buildings such as the Moonlight Pavillion, Throne Hall, and the Phochani Pavilion. Say goodbye to the Royal Palace, and continue to the National Museum of Cambodia, famous for its unique architecture and beautiful garden. The last stop today will be Wat Phnome - the most famous majestic sanctuary. We will then journey through the beautiful countryside to Phnom Kulen by private car, where we will start our hiking. Phnom Kulen has a giant peak of a mountain range that lies at only 487 meters. Standing on the top of this mountain, you will see spectacular panoramic views over the Angkor area from a modern style pagoda that has an 8-meter tall statue of the reclining Buddha reaching Nirvana named Preah Ang Thom. Finally, you will have a chance to visit the wonderful waterfall near Srah Damrey - the River of One Thousand Lingas. This waterfall offers fresh air and water to cool off in after your explorations.
